100G PON
Overview
Numerous communication services and applications have emerged over the recent decades. This makes broadband internet access essential for citizens in big cities and in rural areas, creating an increasing need for digital communication bandwidth.
Network operators have deployed a number of solutions to provide digital communication services to their customers. One is FTTx (Fiber To The “something”) which provides digital communication over optical fibers either all the way to the customer premises or to a place close to the customer combined with a DSL solution covering the last part of the way. FTTx networks are typically implemented as Passive Optical Networks (PONs), which brings digital communication to a number of end customers through optical fibers.
Over the recent years standardization organizations have has defined several PON systems supporting increasing data rates. A Huawei 100G PON prototype system was demonstrated during BT’s Innovation 2017 exhibition. A ValkyrieBay chassis equipped with the unique Xena Loki-100G-5S-1P 5-speed dual-media test module was used to generate Ethernet traffic through the 100G PON verifying the proper functioning of the system.
