XENA ADDS TLS TEST FEATURE TO L4-7 TEST PLATFORM

Copenhagen, 16 January 2018: Xena Networks, the global leader in Gigabit Ethernet Test Equipment Price Performance, has added the option for testing Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2 via XenaConnect, the software used for managing Xena’s Layer 4-7 test platform.

The new TLS test feature makes it easy for test engineers to find the right balance between security and network performance. This is done by comparing the performance impact of using different cipher suites and certificates.

“There is no point implementing a really high level of security if it slows down performance to the extent that people stop using the service or start finding ways around it,” explains Jacob Nielsen, CEO for Xena Networks.

SSL/TLS encryption is used extensively now for web browsing, email, ftp and so on. But it can also encrypt malicious content, such as virus, malware, etc. To prevent this, many security devices such as next-generation firewalls and packet brokers can now decrypt the SSL/TLS traffic on one side, inspect the content, and encrypt the traffic on the other side, acting as a proxy.

Since these devices (either stand-alone or combined) can see the decrypted content of the traffic, they can also be used for antivirus and application control, intrusion prevention, web filtering, etc. However, there is a performance tradeoff – the higher the security, the slower the performance. When inline devices do more computing-intensive jobs, the traffic throughput drops. The challenge is finding the right balance between security and performance.

“We provide users with native TLS traffic generation using up-to-date cipher suites and certificates, so they can compare parameters such as handshake per second, concurrent TLS session, and TLS throughput,” says Jacob Nielsen. “This has real value for both Network Equipment Manufacturers (NEMs) as part of their production process, as well as datacenters trying to compare different security setups.”

The new TLS feature is available as of Xena Layer 4-7 software releases 75.
