Gigamon Customer Testimonials

National Instruments on Gigamon

“With GigaVUE®, we can optimize and extend the power of our network monitoring tools. This unique data access switch helps us set up our tools and get the exact data that we need, all without affecting network performance.” -- Sohail Bhamani, Senior Network Engineer, National Instruments.

Customer Profile - National Instruments is a technology pioneer and leader in virtual instrumentation, a revolutionary concept that has changed the way engineers and scientists in industry, government and academia approach measurement and automation. Leveraging PCs and commercial technologies, virtual instrumentation increases productivity and lowers costs for test, control and design applications through easy-to integrate software, such as NI LabVIEW, and modular measurement and control hardware for PXI, PCI, USB and Ethernet. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, National Instruments has more than 4,000 employees and direct operations in nearly 40 countries. For the past seven years, FORTUNE magazine has named NI one of the 100 best companies to work for in America.

How can your monitoring and analysis tools get complete and non-intrusive access to your network? Sohail Bhamani, of National Instruments, shares his discovery!

Sohail Bhamani, a Senior Network Engineer responsible for the network monitoring and analysis solutions at National Instruments Headquarters in Austin, Texas, had to ask this question last year. He was amazed at the versatile and complete solution he found.

Sohail decided that adding more span ports, loading down switches and using more in-band network bandwidth was not the answer for the three building campus. The cost of the additional span ports and switch upgrades alone would be very high, not to mention system downtime.

He had an additional critical requirement: to be able to monitor all packets, and filter the views for certain tools while not consuming critical production bandwidth.

The answer came from a visiting sales engineer. A few weeks later he had his solution running. “It paid for itself almost immediately because there was no network downtime” says Sohail.

What was the solution? The GigaVUE®-MP from Gigamon Systems.

At each building on the sprawling NI campus there is a GigaVUE® unit connected to server farm networks, user distribution networks, and Internet edge networks. Each unit is available for custom attachments.

The GigaVUE® units are attached through an out-of-band 10 Gbps single mode fiber network and can be configured through the network from any point. This allows for each monitoring tool to have access to data without going to each device and making changes.

This connectivity allows for a continuous monitoring fabric and a non-intrusive view of the entire network without affecting the production network while allowing them to focus on the exact data required for testing, analysis and review. The GigaVUE® Data Access Network (DAN) is the key to the out-of-band network that allows for the complete access and secure control.

GigaVUE®'s advanced filtering and secure access feature makes this a near perfect solution.

With the excellent support from Gigamon’s Senior Technical Support Specialist John Matarazzo and his team, Sohail says NI was able to be up and running in just days. Sohail’s team has been trained to use filtering, aggregation and multicasting features to support all of their test requirements and make full usage of valuable diagnostic and monitoring tools.

“With GigaVUE®, we can optimize and extend the power of our network monitoring tools,” says Soheil. “This unique data access solution helps us set up our tools and get the exact data that we need, all without affecting network performance.”

The GigaVUE® multi-rule mapping filter allows for redistribution of the aggregated traffic to multiple tools based on either pre-defined logical attributes (VLAN, IP subnet, application, etc.) or custom filters to insure optimal traffic loads at each tool. This provides National Instruments with a flexible, cost effective and dynamic network monitoring solution with comprehensive coverage.

“We are very pleased that we could help National Instruments take full advantage of their investment in and usability of their network monitoring tools,” said Denny K Miu, founder and CEO of Gigamon Systems. “GigaVUE® has enabled many customers to deliver comprehensive coverage of their network with their current monitoring tools, which is essential in today’s business-critical networks.”

About Gigamon Systems

Founded in 2003 by six veterans of network monitoring and telecommunications equipment companies, Gigamon Systems is the inventor and leading provider of Data-Access Switches. Its flagship product, GigaVUE®, can multicast packets from one span or tap to many tools to solve the span port sharing problem. It also can aggregate and intelligently filter packets from many spans or taps to one or multiple tools to solve the problem of monitoring flows across complex mesh topologies and virtual networks. GigaVUE® facilitates unobtrusive parallel tool deployment with network-wide coverage, significantly reducing customers’ capital budgets and yielding immediate ROI benefits.
